3D Animation: Blender

Learn the basics of Blender, a professional, open source 3D modeling and animation toolkit. Blender is used to create animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. This program contains numerous modeling features as well as an integrated game and physics engine.

Start with a 2D animation to familiarize yourself with the software. Work up to modeling and rigging a 3D character animation.

Costume Design

Join professional freelance theatrical costumer C. Delari Johnston on a tasty theatrical journey to explore the delicious history of New Haven’s Pizza Culture. Working with A Broken Umbrella Theater Co.’s Ruben Oritz and your fellow camper’s acting troupe, help bring the story to life! You will design and create a costume for a Performance at the end of the week. Learn how to research, plan your creation, and collaborate with your actors. Learn sewing and crafting skills to make your ideas take shape and then see them in action!

Creative Writing

Over the course of the week, participants will write about important times in their lives. They will start by building one-of-a-kind shadow boxes to house significant objects that elicit stories, memories, and histories that commemorate important times in their lives. Participants will then use the objects as prompts to write memoirs, stories, and poems that they will edit, revise, and bind into a small, personalized book to accompany their shadowbox.

Mosaics

Mosaic is the art of creating images with pieces of glass, stone, or pottery. Explore this exciting art form and learn the same techniques used by ancient civilizations, from the Romans and Greeks to the early Byzantine Empire. You will learn the basics of breaking and cutting materials with special mosaic and glass cutting tools, as well as designing, and arranging the tiles to create works of art. During the week, you will have the option of choosing from among the following projects:

3D Printing

We’ve all been there. Your favorite toy car broke or your dog bit your legos. There’s no way to salvage that beloved item that had been so dear to your heart. Look no further! With the help of 3D Printing, those forgotten, disfigured items can be not only fixed but improved! The limits of creation are your imagination. You can design a new spoiler for your toy car or a one-of-a-kind lego piece to use in your next builds.

The Ceramics Factory

Have you ever wondered how your dishes were made? In this workshop, you will learn some of the processes used in industrial ceramics fabrication. Use split-casting molds to make a set of uniform cups for your table, add a handle and call it a mug. Make plates and bowls with slump and drape molds. Extrude clay for precise components.

Participants will be making high-fire ceramic dishes that are food-safe.

Open Studio

The culmination of a summer of exploration, design, mistakes and more comes together with a review of our favorite projects. Create a Frankenstein, join disparate projects together to make something new. Try something new, make a wheel-thrown piece of pottery on one of our micro potter's wheels.

Sew Around the World

Join professional freelance theatrical costumer, C. Delari Johnston to learn how to sew by hand and on a sewing machine. You will grasp everything from how to thread a needle, knot a thread, and create a pattern for the pillow and bag you will make this week.

Join us for a week devoted to learning about life aboard a ship of the line in Admiral Nelson’s British Navy. Born in 1758, Nelson died aboard his ship, the HMS Victory, at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Regarded as one of the greatest naval commanders of all time, Nelson had racked up an impressive career of service and command that is remembered and memorialized to this day.
