The Farm

Farmers uphold values and responsibilities often taken for granted in urban life. The expectations for the world of agriculture are generous, wherein workers in agricultural careers are meant to produce goods for those detached from such lifestyles. Frequently, this frames the life of a farmer as that of a provider, but their duties are not as simple as planting seeds and feeding pigs.

Forest Camp

As America began to concentrate work and people in cities in the 19th Century, thoughtful educators and organizations advocated reconnecting children (and adults) with nature. We organized parks and camps where the air was fresher, schedules could be more relaxed, and learning could be spontaneous. This Workshop explores the treasures of East Rock Park and the art of exploring. Construct meeting and play structures. Watch birds and bugs and turtles. Discover the power of quiet watching. Listen to birds and bugs, water and the wind. Act out stories. Wade and climb. Build and float boats.

Analog Gamebuilder

Technology surrounds us and is so woven into our everyday lives. Even entertainment, like video games, has grown so much in popularity and accessibility becoming a driving force in our culture. Despite this, it is nice to take a step back and see which way the dice fall. In the tradition of classic tabletop gaming, create a war band of miniatures and skirmish with other 'bands' to gain wealth, power, and size. Painting your figures gives them a personality all their own. In between games, help with the construction of a detailed scenery board to have for years to come.

Slime Lab

Slime is still happening, and never really went out of style. Slime was inspired by Silly Putty, another long polymer compound discovered in New Haven 81 years ago. The Chemist James Wright was looking for a substitute for rubber because World War II had disrupted the supply. Wright concocted a gooey mess. Disappointed, he threw a glob of it on the floor. It bounced back at him. A new kind of play was born.

Hiking and Journaling

East Rock Park was established 140 years ago to preserve and share the woodlands and wildlife that surround the river that powered Whitney’s machines. 400 acres rise from the tidal basin to a trap rock ridge with a panoramic view of Long Island sound.

Mindstorms

Whether it's for a simple moving sculpture or a maze-solving robot, adding a computer can make any Lego project cooler.

Play with Lego Mindstorms, a system of parts that allow you to computerize Lego. Add motors to move your creation around, and sensors to let it detect the world around it. Then, learn the basics of programming and make your robot accomplish tasks difficult for a purely mechanical machine to do. Work with others to tackle engineering challenges, and build robots that you design.

Adirondack Chair

****Please note that the tools and techniques explored in this camp require an advanced level of strength and manual dexterity. We will not accept any campers who are younger than 12, and we ask that parents call us to discuss any questions regarding their child's readiness. Campers may also meet the instructor before signing up.****

CNC Design

Students will learn the art of milling and discover where computer-aided design meets the physical world. Conceive, draw, prototype, and mill your own unique creation. Learn how individual parts and to a greater whole. Using computer-aided design (CAD) software, each student will draw his/her own unique object that they can then produce using our industrial 3-axis Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) routers.

Arduino

Arduino (ar-dwee-noh) is an open-source electronics prototyping platform used by hundreds of thousands of makers and hobbyists across the planet. With an Arduino board, you can control a huge variety of devices and projects with only a minimal knowledge of electronics.
