Laser Cut Week

Please Note: This is a four day class- Mon, Tue, Wed & Fri.
We are closed, Thurs., July 4th.

Precision is key. There are two primary challenges for this week’s camp.

Design a car that can travel the farthest in an all-terrain obstacle course.
Design the fastest car for a straight track.

Learn how to use Rhinoceros 3D, a design software program. Use the Trotec laser cutter to make the parts for your vehicle. Construct the winning car or cheer your friends on to victory. Gear motors, DC motors, and battery packs are included.

Skate & Create

This camp is all about skateboarding. Learn how skateboards are made–starting with the trees we harvest to craft them. Design your very own skateboard shape and graphics. Learn how to use basic tools and image making techniques to convert your design into reality. Use the off cut scraps from your skateboard to fabricate a unique piece of art. Create a basic mold to formulate custom skateboarding wax. When your board is finished you’ll get to put it to use on a ramp we build and paint together!

Build A Computer!

How does a computer actually work? It’s not magic, it’s science!

Over the course of a week, peel back some of the mystery and learn about topics such as binary numbers, boolean logic, static memory, and system clocks. Find out how a processor “thinks” and dip your toes into reading some of their native language, machine code. Then try out the more human-friendly programming language Python and discover how the two are more similar than you might think.

A Broken Umbrella Theatre

Play with A Broken Umbrella Theatre! and learn the building blocks of ensemble theater-making.

A Broken Umbrella Theater is proud to team up with The Eli Whitney Museum this summer to present a one-of-a-kind experience. They will be offering a one-week theater camp for students interested in creating original devised work. Through the uses of improv, theater games, and a little bit of history, campers ( guided by members of A Broken Umbrella theater) will work to create original pieces inspired by New Haven Pizza! Mangia!!

Connecticut Bridges

Overcoming obstacles, forging paths between unlikely plateaus, and bringing communities together — bridges have a history that is infused with science and culture. This week you will learn about the history of these structures in Connecticut and explore the engineering behind them. You’ll construct models of important CT bridges and create functioning movable designs.

Analog Gamebuilder

Technology surrounds us and is so woven into our everyday lives. Even entertainment, like video games, has grown so much in popularity and accessibility becoming a driving force in our culture. Despite this, it is nice to take a step back and see which way the dice fall. In the tradition of classic tabletop gaming, create a war band of miniatures and skirmish with other 'bands' to gain wealth, power, and size. Painting your figures gives them a personality all their own. In between games, help with the construction of a detailed scenery board to have for years to come.

Natural Dyes: A Fibers Workshop

This camp is all about natural color! Learn about plant-based dye with artist and designer Isa Rodriguez. Harvest material from local plants to create eco-prints. Use marigold flowers to create warm yellows. Use madder roots to make vibrant reds. Build an indigo vat to create brilliant blues. Dye t-shirts and bandanas with the help of plants—embrace your natural style!

Adirondack Chair

****Please note that the tools and techniques explored in this camp require an advanced level of strength and manual dexterity. We will not accept any campers who are younger than 12, and we ask that parents call us to discuss any questions regarding their child's readiness. Campers may also meet the instructor before signing up.****

Classic Model Building

Please Note: This is a four day class- Mon, Tue, Wed & Fri.
We are closed, Thursday July 4th.

Plastic Scale models began to appear in the 1940s. While easier to construct than the balsa models that preceded them, plastic models still require time, patience and know-how that are the focus of this Workshop. Classic models are becoming rare.
