Care and Feeding of the 3D Printer

Explore the world of 3D printers, inside and out. Learn how they work, how they're built, and how to program them to make intricately detailed parts.

We'll take a look at the internals of the Museum's very own Prusa i3 printers, design parts in Fusion 360, and fiddle with PrusaSlicer, the software that figures out exactly how the printer needs to move. Then, work in teams to figure out how to make the most of the tool.

2019 Best Books

This year we honor some books whose images and words challenge us to think fresh and deep about how we get along. See and hear their stories. Then choose projects to recreate and add to their themes.

Sew a bear that will be able to do bear things. Or construct a hedgehog. Or construct a cat and hats that – spoiler alert – that cat will get to wear in the end. Or paint stones to leave thoughtful messages in places that will surprise and delight.

A day of hearing, seeing, exploring, and playing, to learn.

COVID Digital Design Challenge

We are in the midst of the “Maker” revolution and we have the tools to turn your ideas into reality.

Crash courses in laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC milling will lend you the resources to build your designs. After learning the basics you will work in a group of 2-3 students in a friendly, yet fierce design competition. The Challenge: Windmills

COVID 3D Printing Wk 10

The 3D Printer is a tool with extraordinary versatility. This workshop will focus the printer’s power to assist you in precision engineering.

Bubble Wand
Brainstorm as a group to sort the directions you might pursue. Research then draw and print a wand. Take it outside to test it. You will be surprised at what it takes to design a good one.

COVID Minecraft: Skyblock to Skyscrapers

Minecraft is a game that drops you alone and empty-handed in the wilderness, yet still allows you to eventually build massive structures and complex machines. But what if you started with even less?

Explore the puzzle that is Skyblock, a popular challenge map for Minecraft that starts you off with little more than a half-filled chest and a tree. Learn the basic tools of multiplying your resources in Minecraft, and how to use them as efficiently as possible. Soon, you'll worry about what to build with your blocks, rather than how to obtain them.

COVID Garage Band

Learn the basics of music theory using our iMacs and Apple's Garage Band.

Then add drum beats, instrumental tracks, and effects to compose an original song. On Friday, collaborate with your 'band mates' in the studio to have a jam session worth recording. Build on skills you already have or learn them for the first time – and then build on them!

COVID Digital Fabrication Essentials

Learn the ins and outs of two of the most essential digital fabrication tools in any shop, the laser cutter and the CNC router. Conceive, draw, prototype, and mill and laser-cut your own unique creation. Learn how individual parts add to a greater whole. Using computer-aided design (CAD) software, each student will draw his/her own unique object that they can then produce using our industrial 3-axis Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) routers and laser cutters.

COVID Minecraft: City Building

Minecraft is a game that gives you the tools to create amazing structures too impractical for real life. But sometimes, the simple tools it provides can still be a bit limiting.

City Building
Work with others to create a town. Claim plots of land, design a floor plan, gather supplies, and build structures that will impress your neighbors. Furnish your home, learn how to power your buildings with circuits, and create a transportation system. By the end of the week you'll create a bustling economy.

COVID Web Design

Learn the principles of website design. Use HTML and CSS to make your own website.
