The World of the Turtle in Art, Legend, & Play

Turtles are ancient creatures whose many different families live in lakes, rivers, woodlands and oceans around the world. They appear to be patient and wise.
They appear in legends: distant cultures- in India, China, and Native America – see the world carried on a turtle's back. They appear in stories from Lewis Carrol to Dr Suess, to Jennifer Oxley's Tuck Turtle in Wonder Pets. Turtles are our neighbors in East Rock Park.

Crash Test Dummies: The Olympics

The Olympics measure all the gifts of the human body: speed, agility, flexibility, strength, and endurance. Crash Test Dummies are also designed to test the capacity of the human body.

As the world’s greatest athletes gather in Tokyo to determine the best of the best, construct 4” tall figures and devices to simulate the extreme challenges that elite athletes endure.

DominOlympics

In the Middle Ages, dominoes traveled from China to Europe with returning missionaries. As this shows, competition can be a powerful force of unification and connectivity. Fast forward a few hundred years and this is the message the Olympics embody: every 4 years the world stops to peacefully compete in sport.

Children love dominoes, but so do adults and even gamblers. Dominoes also have fortunate dimensions that want to be set into chain reactions: quick and simple...or insanely complicated.

Exchanging Cultures: Alexander Von Humboldt: The Discovery of Nature

Most explorers sailed to master trade or empire. Alexander Von Humboldt sailed to master knowledge. Born in Prussia in1769, he loved learning but not school. The world would become his classroom. In 1799 - just as Whitney began his work here- Humboldt began an expedition to South America that would make him the most famous geographer in the world. He waded in rivers and climbed mountains always measuring everything, always trusting his senses to focus his understanding.

Analog Gamebuilder Wk 5

In the tradition of the strategy games Mordheim, Warhammer or Dungeons and Dragons, create a war band of 10 miniatures and skirmish with other 'bands' to gain wealth, powers, and size. Painting your figures gives them a personality all their own.

In between games, help with the construction of a detailed scenery board to have for years to come. Build the environment, learn strategies, play the game. All levels welcome.
