Birds are master engineers and build with diverse materials.
Go on daily walks in the park that borders us and observe bird-built architectural wonders. Inspired by them, build your own nests using wood, mud, straw, cloth, string and other diverse found materials. Record your findings in a journal you will fill with notes and sketches. You might even find nests built by other animals on your discovery walks.
Study and observe birds and their engineering masterpieces by making a wooden fandex that will help you identify different nests. Each day you will work together to build an outdoor human sized nest.
Build a robin’s shelf inspired by Beth Perry and the Fan Brother’s 2019 book, “The Scarecrow.” Make a traditional basket nest with Sculpey eggs and a wooden bird watching over them. We will also build duck nest boxes as a group, encouraging ducks to visit our neighboring park and river.
Help us construct an osprey platform to invite these beautiful birds to enjoy our naturally vibrant habitat.
